Instructor: Yuko Okumura
Yuko started her zen practice at age 16, influenced by her late father who was practicing Zen as a lay person by following Kodo Sawaki Roshi and Kosho Uchiyama Roshi's teachings. She studied Buddhism at Komazawa University in Tokyo and married to a Soto Zen priest Shohaku Okumura in 1983. She has been a Tenzo, (name for a head cook in Japanese Zen Monastery) offering traditional vegetarian meals during sesshin (an intensive meditation retreat) at Sanshinji, a Japanese Soto Zen Temple in Bloomington, Indiana.

Sanshin Zen Community is an international Buddhist sangha founded in 1996 by Shohaku Okumura, a Soto Zen priest and respected translator of the thirteenth-century Japanese Zen master, Eihei Dogen Zenji. Based at Sanshin-ji, in Bloomington, Indiana, Sanshin exists to provide intensive practice of zazen in the style of Kosho Uchiyama-roshi, informed by thorough study of Dogen's teachings and communal work.
